Roots Run Deep

My father grew up in Wenatchee, Washington — the Apple Capital of the World, as they proudly call it. A farm boy through and through, raised with the kind of resourcefulness that only comes from working the land and making do with what you have.

He became a diesel mechanic, and the man could fix damn near anything with whatever he could find. During World War Two, that made him one of the most popular guys around — when equipment broke down and the mission couldn't wait, he was the one they called. No parts? No problem. He'd figure it out.

That same grit carried him through a distinguished military career. He went on to become a Master Army Aviator, serving all over the world. But no matter where the Army sent him, he never forgot that small hometown nestled in the valleys of Washington State — the orchards, the hard-working people, the self-reliant spirit of rural America.

Mi padre creció en Wenatchee, Washington — la Capital Mundial de la Manzana, como la llaman con orgullo. Un chico de campo de pura cepa, criado con el tipo de ingenio que solo surge de trabajar la tierra y arreglárselas con lo que se tiene.

Pero sin importar a dónde lo enviara el Ejército, nunca olvidó ese pequeño pueblo natal enclavado en los valles del estado de Washington — los huertos, la gente trabajadora, el espíritu autosuficiente de la América rural.
